Leipzig's anger at the referee - "Not worthy of the game"

National player David Raum of RB Leipzig attacked referee Benjamin Brand after the 3-1 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen. "The referee wasn't worthy of the game, I have to be honest. That was way too big for him, I told him so during the game," Raum said in a fierce attack on Sky TV: "He was completely out of his depth. I also told his linesman. I think he nodded a bit too."

The Leipzig players were particularly annoyed that Brand did not whistle for a penalty for RB in stoppage time. On the ensuing counter-attack, Leverkusen's Montrell Culbreath made everything clear.

"I think it's a shame that the referee doesn't even look at it," said Raum: "Sometimes it's just like that: they have a bad day sometimes. They make mistakes from time to time, I understand that. But then they have to admit it and not talk down to themselves. (...) I just don't like the way they do it. There are referees in the Bundesliga who make it likeable. Unfortunately, it wasn't like that today."

Andrich's assessment of the scene is completely different

In the controversial scene, Leverkusen's Robert Andrich actually caught the ball with his arm outstretched, but before that he was also slightly undermined by RB defender Willi Orban. "What am I supposed to do in that situation? I can't tell my arm at that moment: if you fall down, just stay down. If there's a penalty for that, then get well soon."

Of course, Leipzig coach Ole Werner saw it differently. "I didn't see it as a good performance. Not because it was all kraut and beetroot, but because I think the referee was completely wrong in two crucial situations," said the coach, who also called for a yellow card against Leverkusen's Arthur in the 70th minute in addition to the penalty that was not given.
