Better treatment for blood cancer: study starts in Dresden and Kiel

Blood cancer affects tens of thousands of people in Germany. For many, a stem cell transplant is the last hope. But which preparation for this procedure helps the most, especially for older or previously ill patients? Researchers at Dresden University Hospital and Kiel University Hospital now want to find out in the largest German study of its kind.

New research project: Shaping the end of life yourself

What should the end of life look like - and who decides? A new project in Dresden is tackling precisely these questions. "KOMPASS 70+" by Volkssolidarität Dresden helps older people to shape the last phase of their lives in a self-determined way at an early stage. The Evangelische Hochschule Dresden is providing scientific support for the project.

Dresden researchers want to halve chemotherapy in children

Today, nine out of ten children with leukemia survive their illness. However, many suffer from the consequences of chemotherapy for the rest of their lives. Researchers at the NCT/UCC Dresden are working on gentler treatments. Using CRISPR technology and precision medicine, they are looking for molecular weak points in cancer cells. Their goal: in ten years, only half as much chemotherapy.

Premiere in Germany: Kidneys travel with high-tech care

Leipzig University Hospital was the first clinic in Germany to perform two kidney transplants using a new method. With mechanical perfusion, the organs are continuously supplied with nutrients during transportation. The procedure is intended to reduce damage to the transplant and increase patient safety.

Saxon researchers switch bodily functions on and off with light

Violet light on, blue light off: Researchers at Leipzig University and TU Dresden have developed molecular switches that control bodily functions using light pulses. The scientists can use them to activate nerve cells, regulate adrenaline release and control intestinal movements. The new method could help to better understand diseases and develop new therapies.
