Saxony: 240 dead wolves found in 25 years

Run over, killed illegally or died naturally: In the past 25 years, 240 wolves have been found dead in Saxony. This is according to the database of the federal documentation and advisory center on wolves. Only in Brandenburg (405) and Lower Saxony (314) were the figures higher.

In 162 cases, the cause of death was a traffic accident, 21 times illegal killing was proven and 34 times the wolves died of natural causes. In several cases, the cause of death was unclear or still unclear. According to the statistics, the number of wolves found dead nationwide was 1,315 in the years 2000 to 2025.

According to the data, five of the ten most recently reported cases in Germany were in Saxony. One old wolf died after a traffic accident in the district of North Saxony. Four animals in the district of Bautzen died of natural causes at the end of September and in October.

The death of two females discovered in the Hoyerswerda area had caused a stir. It was initially suspected that the animals had been shot. However, following an investigation at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW) in Berlin, this can now be ruled out. Instead, the experts assume that the two animals died after a fight with each other.
