Saxony plans to invest up to one billion euros in hospitals by 2030. "We need to invest so that our hospitals are well positioned in the future," said Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) in the state parliament. The "Saxony Fund" and funds from the federal government are available for this purpose - in this way, the necessary structural change can be mastered. Behind the "Saxony Fund" is an investment program based on the special fund for infrastructure and climate neutrality.
Supply in the area should be secured
Köpping appealed to all those involved to support this path and to create planning security for the hospitals as quickly as possible for the coming years. "Last but not least, this is also a state-wide municipal investment program that secures and creates jobs." To ensure that investments are made in the right places, there is the Saxon hospital plan. It always follows the goals of ensuring high quality and care in the area.
More doctors in Saxony and still vacant medical practices
Köpping also gave an overview of outpatient care. In 1995, there were 13,025 doctors working in Saxony, by 2024 there would be 20,180. That may sound good, but doctors today have different expectations of their work and their life outside of work. "I can well understand that the compatibility of work and family and the desire for planned and manageable working hours have come to the fore and are in line with social developments."
This is why there are still unfilled doctor's posts despite the rising number of doctors, the Minister emphasized: "But the good news is that our long-term measures are slowly starting to take effect. At the beginning of 2023, 452 GP posts were vacant. A year ago, there were 373. Today, there are 309 vacancies."
