After more than four and a half years, the renovation work in the inner courtyard of the famous Dresden Zwinger is officially complete. The baroque garden ensemble is now once again open to visitors in its entirety.
The Zwinger, which was inaugurated in 1719, is one of the most important Baroque buildings. With up to five million visitors a year, it is one of the most famous sights in Dresden. In addition to the courtyard ensemble, it houses renowned museums such as the Old Masters Picture Gallery and the porcelain collection. The entire ensemble covers an area of 100,000 square meters. The inner courtyard alone measures 15,500 square meters - the equivalent of two soccer pitches.
The result of the renovation work is impressive, said Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) at the reopening ceremony. It speaks for the craftsmanship and the claim to both preserve the heritage of the ancestors and to move into the future with clever strength.
Refurbishment cost 17 million euros
The renovation of the Zwingerhof began in February 2021 and cost around 17 million euros. In addition to new paths, lawns and modern lighting, the courtyard was given a modern underground supply network. Two fountain basins were also renewed. Part of the inner courtyard had already opened in May.
Archeological excavations were carried out to accompany the renovation work. The research team found evidence of the design of the gardens in the 16th to 18th centuries as well as traces of suburban development from the 15th century.
