The historic Dresden funicular celebrates its 130th birthday this Sunday. Although it is not the oldest, it is one of the most beautiful funicular railroads in Germany, according to the Dresden transport company. The funicular has connected the districts of Loschwitz and Weißer Hirsch since 1895. It is now a listed building.
It is popular with tourists and day trippers thanks to its attractive 550-metre-long route and a 100-metre-long viaduct. However, the anniversary will not be celebrated this year: a party has been canceled due to tight budgets.
The two carriages are connected by a train cable and are powered by a stationary winding machine. The journey takes around five minutes. The funicular, which opened in 1895, undergoes an inspection twice a year and is also subject to an annual TÜV inspection. According to the transport company, funicular railroads are one of the safest means of transportation.
