SC Magdeburg started the new Champions League season with a clear victory. The defending champions won 37:31 (21:17) against Paris Saint-Germain. Magdeburg's top scorer in front of 6,182 spectators was Felix Claar with ten goals.
Before the game, Felix Claar, Gisli Kristjansson and Magnus Saugstrup were presented with the Excellence Awards by the EHF - for the best players of the past season. A minute's silence was also held for the deceased referee Marcus Helbig.
Change after the break
The Magdeburg team lacked a bit of grip in defense in the first half. They also lacked clarity in attack, but the hosts still led by four goals at the break.
In the break, PSG switched to a 5:1 defense to keep SCM further away from goal, but Magdeburg found solutions and kept the lead constant. The visitors were also unable to reduce the deficit when they were outnumbered, while Magdeburg extended its lead to six goals for the first time when it was outnumbered. Next Thursday, SCM will face FC Barcelona for the second matchday.
