Werder Bremen were the better team for 70 minutes in Leipzig, but failed to take their chances. The penalty shoot-out brought the decision.

RB Leipzig's women's footballers have been eliminated in the last 16 of the DFB Cup. Werder Bremen only won 5:4 in a penalty shoot-out. The score was 1:1 (1:1) after regular time and extra time. Marlene Müller had put the hosts ahead after just seven minutes. Juliane Wirtz equalized with a volley in the second minute of stoppage time in the first half. In the penalty shoot-out, Persis Oteng, Leipzig's sixth shooter, lost her nerve and missed in front of 1473 spectators.

Bremen started very offensively and had a huge chance through Maja Sternad (2nd). Her header narrowly missed the RB women's goal. After Leipzig took the lead, which Lisa Baum had set up with a dribble, the Saxons were the better team for just under half an hour and had the chance to make it 2-0 through Delice Boboy (26), but Mariella El Sherif in the Werder goal made a brilliant save. The equalizer came as a surprise as it was Bremen's first shot on goal following a corner kick.

Guests dominate second half

After the break, it was almost all Werder playing and Leipzig goalkeeper Elvira Herzog held on to the draw. The Swiss made outstanding saves against Sternad (58') and Larissa Mühlhaus (65', 74') to save her team from going into extra time.

Werder continued to dominate proceedings in extra time, but the most compelling chances only came in stoppage time. Herzog (120.+1) made another spectacular save from Emöke Papai. There was not much going forward from RB, although individual players did provide some relief with solos.

Both teams were extremely accurate in the penalty shoot-out. The fourth shooters - Ricarda Walkling for Bremen and Lou-Ann Joly for RB - were denied by the goalkeepers. Then Oteng missed.
