The city of Chemnitz wants to save around 23 million euros in the coming year with a budget freeze for some areas of the city administration. The background to this is the tight budget situation and the requirements of the state administration in connection with the 2026 budget, the city announced. Treasurer Ralph Burghart has therefore imposed a five percent budget freeze for certain budget items from January 1, 2026. Savings will be made on the city's own staff, office materials, travel and training costs and grants to independent organizations.
Burghart explained: "The city of Chemnitz cannot cope with the deficit on its own, but must do everything necessary to meet the requirements of the state directorate and thus remain capable of acting independently." The state directorate has obliged Chemnitz to ensure that effective measures are introduced to reduce the planned deficit of 100 million euros before the credit authorization is used in 2026.
