Dresden Central Station closed for several days in January and February

For rail passengers in Dresden, the new year begins with major restrictions. In January and February, the main station will be closed for several days, as confirmed by Deutsche Bahn on request. The news portal "t-online" had previously reported.

Full closure on the second weekend in January

The junction will be completely closed from January 9, 0:00 to January 11, 23:59. According to information from Deutsche Bahn, there will be train cancellations and replacement services on all lines serving the main station this weekend.

Long-distance services to and from Berlin and Leipzig will end and begin in Dresden-Neustadt. Replacement services will run to and from Prague between Neustadt and Usti nad Labem. Regional services between Dresden Neustadt, Reick, Plauen and Friedrichstadt stations will be canceled. Substitute bus and streetcar services will be set up there.

Further restrictions in February

A good month later, the main station will be closed again. From February 14, 4:00 am to February 15, 11:59 pm, all trains will be affected, with the exception of S-Bahn trains. Long-distance services to Chemnitz will be diverted via Riesa over the weekend. Otherwise, all lines will end or start at the Altstadt, Neustadt or Reick stations. On the night of February 16, there will be a full closure from midnight to 4 a.m., which will also affect S-Bahn trains.

Crossing structure to be replaced

The reason for the closure is construction work on the crossing structure under Budapester Straße as part of the lengthy expansion of the Leipzig-Dresden line. Due to its poor condition, it is being replaced by a new structure. According to the railroad company, it is optimizing the tracks so that trains will be able to travel up to 80 kilometers per hour instead of the previous 60. In this way, the railroad wants to increase the capacity of the Dresden railroad junction.

In general, the work is taking place during ongoing operations, but closures are always necessary. In the current construction phase, the eastern part of the crossing structure is being renewed first. The reconstruction of the western side will follow from spring.
