The Chemnitz Art Collections have received a top-class donation of 42 Expressionist works of art. They come from the collection of entrepreneur Hermann Gerlinger. They include key works by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Erich Heckel and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. The donation is "a great stroke of luck", said General Director Florence Thurmes. "Such gestures are extraordinary, especially when they enrich and highlight our own holdings in this way."
The donation covers the entire technical spectrum from oil paintings to watercolors, drawings and prints to sculptures, according to a statement. Part of the donation is expressly for the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff House, which opened in spring.
Exhibition of the new acquisitions from mid-October
The works of art that will find a new home in Chemnitz include the painting "Two Men" by Kirchner, which is a great enrichment for the art collections in terms of its own collection history, it said. Another highlight was the painting "You and I" by Schmidt-Rottluff - a double portrait of the artist and his wife in the year of their wedding in 1919, which already shows his change in style following the First World War with simplified forms and stronger contours.
The new additions will reportedly be shown in an exhibition from October 18 to February 1 at the Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz.
